Spain wants a casino city
June 4, 2009
The BBC reported that the Spanish parliament plans to approve a law that would permit to build the biggest European entertainment and leisure complex. It would be in the Spanish region of Aragon, near the village of Ontinena.
It’s a Gran Scala project and it includes building theme parks, casino-hotels and racecourse.
Though Spain is quite a religious country, a 13th century Church of Saint Mary of the hill in the centre of Ontinena will guide morally over the city.
First the components of the parliament weren’t sure if it would be possible to plan a city like that in that village, because many Roman Catholics associate casinos with deadly sins. Surprisingly the 80-year old Father Lorenzo, who is the priest of Ontinena, reacted very well on the plan of the casino city. He claimed that according to him it’s a good idea.
Spanish people are looking forward to the casino city in their country and they are supporting the ILD (International Leisure Development) to build the city.
The plan is to build about 30 casino-hotels, a convention centre, golf courses, theme parks, a racecourse and a dog track. The area will have the size of 1.500 football pitches. More than 80% of the population of the Spanish region is willing to have a European Las Vegas across the street.
Minnesota blocks gambling sites
May 24, 2009
The state of Minnesota found a way how the block its citizens to access the online gambling sites.
The state’s Department of Public Safety asked about 11 Internet service providers (ISP) to prevent the access to hundreds of websites that are associated with online gambling.
The Minnesota government explained this action by citing a federal law, which conditions service providers to deny access to any telecommunications services used for gambling.
According to John Morris, who is a general counsel at the Center for Democracy and Technology in Washington D.C., the providers of the internet service are not network operators. Probably the Minnesota action won’t stand in a court of law, because it seems to be unlikely that a court would accept an ISP to discharge with Minnesota’s request. His opinion was reported in the Associated Press.
The co-director of the Berkman Center for Internet & Society at Harvard University, John Palfrey, commented that the government can not force ISP to filter certain sites. It simply doesn’t work, because either too many or too few sites are blocked and it’s easy to circumvent the filters, so the result is kind of meaningless.
There have been already some companies that asked to block iGaming access, but now many of them are trying to rethink the request. One of those companies is also AT&T Inc.
Minnesota officials are not giving up and they are blocking even more websites, beyond the 200 they already blocked.

888.com inappropriate for argentine citizens
May 14, 2009
Luis Duacastella Arbizu, the municipal judge in Buenos Aires, tries to ban the website 888.com. he wants it to be inaccessible for city residents, because according to him, the site violates their local gambling laws, particularly the articles 116, 117 and 118 of the Buenos Aires Contravention Code. 888.com is actually not the only gambling site which seems to be inappropriate. The municipal judge wants to ban also the sites Victor Chandler’s Argentine-facing site and Bwin.
Arbizuís new ruling presupposes that the operating subsidiary Cassava Enterprises, which is 888ís Gibraltar-based, to block Buenos Aires residents the access to the sites 888.com and 888.com.ar.
This new ruling was published already at the end of march in the Buenos Aires governmentís official journal and then he also requested a publishing in the Buenos Aires- based gaming news service, called Yogonet.
The 888.com will take about 48-hours to take all the necessary measures to block the access to the websites to the Buenos Aires residents, who by the way are called also portenos.
